Netball is a great outdoor sport for all ages. It is fun and is a fantastic way to get active.
Basketball has long suffered from a lack of exposure in the UK, not surprising when we live in such a football dominated sporting media climate. Yet, despite this, recent figures suggest that it’s actually the 5th most popular participation sport among 16-25 year olds, behind football, athletics, swimming and cycling*.
My daughter started playing basketball at the Leeds Force Foundation 6 months ago and she loves it! They are committed to getting youngsters involved from around Leeds, from as young as age 4, and are focused on improving the future of the sport and developing talent, as well as giving children the opportunity to enjoy playing at all levels.
The sessions, however, at 1 hour 30 minutes are far from serious. The main theme and aim is having fun whilst being active and getting to grips with the skills needed to play the game.
Quote from Mark Gunn, club and community development manager:
“The coaches are focused on creating a fun environment where the aspects of fundamental movement are blended with activities and games where the core skills of basketball are a focus (shooting, dribbling, passing and footwork). The children then get the opportunity to apply these skills in games.”
I would recommend trying basketball if you’re children haven’t yet – the fun, being active and the spirit of the game are definitely infectious.
