How to Choose Toddler Sandals for Summer Play
A toddler can spot a splash zone from twenty paces, so summer footwear has a busy job to do. Knowing how to choose toddler sandals means looking beyond a cheerful colour or favourite animal print. The best pair should stay put through garden races, seaside scrambling and ice-cream stops, while leaving little feet comfortable enough to keep exploring.
Start with the right sandal fit
Toddlers’ feet are still growing and changing shape, so fit comes before every other feature. A sandal that is too small can rub toes and heels, while one that is too big may slip, trip or make your child grip with their toes as they walk. Neither makes for happy outdoor play.
Measure both feet before buying, ideally later in the day when feet can be slightly fuller. Use the measurement of the larger foot, then check the brand’s sizing guidance rather than relying only on the size they wore last summer. Different styles can fit differently, especially between open-toe sandals and more enclosed adventure styles.
There should be a little growing room at the front, roughly a thumb’s width between the longest toe and the edge of the sandal. The heel should sit securely inside the back, without lifting with every step. If your toddler is already walking confidently, ask them to take a few steps in both sandals. Watch for a shuffle, toes hanging over the front or a strap that slides down the heel.
Check straps, not just shoe size
Adjustable straps make a real difference. Velcro fastenings are quick for busy mornings and allow you to fine-tune the fit as feet swell slightly in warm weather. They can also give growing independence a boost: many toddlers love having a go at fastening their own shoes before heading out.
Look for straps that hold the foot around the ankle and across the top without digging in. If the sandal leaves deep marks after a short try-on, it is probably too tight. Equally, a sandal that spins around the foot is unlikely to stay secure when the day turns into a game of chase.
Choose a style for the adventure ahead
There is no single best sandal for every sunny-day plan. A lightweight open style can be brilliant for dry garden play, while a more covered sandal suits children who are climbing, scooting or walking further. Thinking about where they will wear them helps narrow the choice.
For the beach, paddling and poolside play, water-friendly sandals that dry quickly are practical. Sand can still find its way everywhere, of course, but a simple rinse can make the journey home much less crunchy. A closed or protected toe is useful on pebbly beaches, rocky paths and holidays where little explorers are always on the move.
For everyday nursery drop-offs, park trips and playdates, choose a sandal with a secure heel and supportive straps. Toddlers often switch from sitting in the sandpit to scaling the climbing frame without pause. Their footwear needs to keep up with that wonderfully unpredictable pace.
Open toe or closed toe?
Open-toe sandals give feet plenty of air on very warm days and are easy to shake out after a sandy picnic. They are a lovely option for relaxed outings and dry surfaces, especially for toddlers who dislike a covered foot.
Closed-toe sandals offer more protection from stubs, stones and surprise encounters with a scooter deck. They can be the better pick for active walkers, woodland trails or a holiday with lots of sightseeing. The trade-off is that they may feel warmer, so breathable materials and a good fit matter even more.
Look for grip that supports confident steps
Toddlers do not always notice wet grass, smooth paving or the splash left behind by a paddling pool. A flexible sole with reliable grip helps them move with confidence across changing surfaces.
Turn the sandal over and check the outsole. Deeply lugged soles are not essential for every summer shoe, but some texture and pattern will provide more traction than a completely smooth base. The sole should bend around the ball of the foot, where a child naturally flexes as they walk, rather than feeling stiff from heel to toe.
A supportive sandal does not need to be heavy. In fact, overly bulky footwear can make a new walker feel clumsy. Aim for a light, flexible design that feels easy to lift and lets your toddler run, crouch and climb without a fuss.
Pick materials that suit sun, water and mess
Summer play can involve grass stains, puddles, melting ice lollies and an enthusiastic trip through the sprinkler. The right material depends on what your family’s warm-weather days usually look like.
Water-friendly synthetic materials are useful for beach days and poolside adventures because they tend to dry faster and are easier to wipe clean. Soft textile linings can feel comfortable against skin but may take longer to dry after a proper soaking. Leather sandals can be breathable and hard-wearing for dry days, although they may need more care and are not always the best match for regular water play.
Whichever material you choose, run a hand around the inside before your child wears them for a full day. Look for smooth edges, soft seams and padding around places that might rub, particularly the heel and ankle. A sandal can look perfect on the shelf but still cause irritation once little feet get warm and active.
Consider socks, even in summer
Socks and sandals may not be everyone’s style choice, but practicality often wins with toddlers. A thin pair of cotton socks can help prevent rubbing during long walks, protect feet from cool morning grass and make a sandal feel more comfortable while it is being worn in.
On hot days, bare feet may be preferred. Let your child’s comfort lead the way, and check their skin after the first few outings for any red areas or rubbing.
Let your toddler have a say
A child who is excited about their sandals is more likely to put them on without a lengthy negotiation at the front door. Bright colours, playful prints and familiar details can turn getting ready into part of the adventure.
Offer a choice between two parent-approved pairs rather than an entire wall of options. You keep control of the fit, grip and practicality, while they get the joy of choosing the colour that feels most like them. It is a small moment of independence that can make summer mornings run more smoothly.
At Grass & Air, we think weather is part of the fun, whether it is a warm breeze, a sandy splash or a sudden shower on the walk home. A cheerful sandal that children genuinely want to wear is every bit as useful as one that looks sensible in the hallway.
Know when it is time to size up
Toddler feet can grow quickly, particularly over a busy season of outdoor play. Check the fit every few weeks, and sooner if your child says their sandals hurt, starts taking them off or develops rubbing. Toes pressing against the front, straps at their loosest setting and heel overhang are all signs that it is time for a bigger pair.
Do not assume a sandal will stretch enough to solve a poor fit. Some materials will soften with wear, but a sandal that is too short, narrow or loose from the start is unlikely to become comfortable. Save yourself the blisters and choose the size that works now.
A quick try-on before the first big outing
Before packing sandals for a holiday or relying on them for a full nursery day, try them at home or on a short walk. Let your toddler walk, climb the stairs and play for a little while. Then check their feet, the straps and how easily they can move.
The right pair will feel almost unremarkable to them - secure enough for a dash towards the next adventure, soft enough to forget about, and ready for whatever sunny-day mischief appears around the corner.
